What Is IPL and How Does It Work
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike laser which uses a single focused wavelength, IPL emits broad-spectrum light across multiple wavelengths simultaneously. This allows it to target different chromophores in the skin selectively, including melanin responsible for pigmentation and haemoglobin responsible for redness and vascular concerns, in a single treatment pass.
At Clinica, we use the DYE-SR handpiece on the Harmony XL Pro platform for our IPL skin treatments. It is a clinical-grade IPL system designed specifically for vascular and pigmentation concerns, delivering controlled pulses of light energy that are absorbed by the target, breaking it down for the body to naturally clear over the weeks following treatment. IPL at Clinica is used exclusively for skin concerns, not hair removal.
What Skin Concerns IPL Treat
IPL is used across several concern categories. Explore the ones most relevant to you below.
How IPL Fits Your Treatment Plan
IPL is often most effective as part of a broader treatment plan rather than as a standalone treatment. For pigmentation, it pairs well with Chemical Peels or Skin Needling with brightening serums to address both surface and deeper pigmentation drivers. For rosacea and redness, it is commonly combined with LED Therapy to reduce inflammation and support the skin barrier during and after the treatment course.
The number of sessions and the combination of treatments used alongside IPL is always determined at your consultation based on your concern, skin tone, and goals.
