Cosmetic tattooing is a form of permanent makeup that uses tattooing techniques to apply pigment to the skin to enhance or mimic makeup, such as eyeliner, eyebrows, and lips. The procedure involves using a tattoo gun to implant pigment into the upper layers of the skin to create a semi-permanent cosmetic effect.

Essentially they are the same in the essence that they both puncture the skin and deposit pigment resulting in a “permanent tattoo.” But the method of deposit and depth of colour implanted do differ. Machines used are usually different to allow for more of a shallow pigment deposit. Cosmetic tattoos usually do not penetrate the skin as deep as body tattoos and colours used are usually more tailored to the face.

Client comfort is an important aspect of all semi-permanent procedures. It varies between person to person, most people experience a little discomfort during the first 5-10 minutes of the treatment, but once the area has been numbed effectively, feel very little. Be assured, we use the best topical numbing agents, both before and throughout the procedure ensuring your maximum comfort.

This is a very common question and one that is not easy to answer! Cosmetic tattoos generally last between 1-3 years however there have been cases where cosmetic tattoos have lasted for more than 20 years. So if you are considering a cosmetic tattoo under the misconception that it’s only temporary; then think again. The permanence of a cosmetic tattoo depends on many factors; individuals skin type, medical conditions, colours used, etc. Colours do fade over time, and we usually recommend a touch-up every 2-3 years.

Immediately after procedure your colour will appear darker and more intense, but will subsequently lighten with the healing process. Mild redness or swelling may occur but not for all, for the first couple of days, however normal activity can be resumed immediately following the procedure. We don’t recommend having a cosmetic tattoo procedure prior to an event / special occasion where the area might make you feel a little self-conscious. As the area heals, the pigment will deepen in colour before fading away and this can last anywhere from 3 – 10 days.

We advise not to wear normal cosmetics until the skin has healed as this may cause infection and/or hinder the healing process. If you absolutely have to, a light application of newly opened mineral make-up using new / clean brushes and wands is permitted, but we would rather you keep the treatment site hygienically clean and lightly moisturised to promote efficient healing. Once healed you can wear as much make-up as you wish, although you probably will not need to!

Permanent Makeup also called micro-pigmentation is designed to fade. So the colour you have today will not be the colour in 5 to 10 years’ time. Patients that desire a red lipstick today will fade into the softness of pinks in the future. Plan to have your enhancement maintained with refresher treatments.

Cosmetic tattooing procedures are not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. You will be lying flat for quite some time, which could be uncomfortable for you. A letter from your doctor will be required – please call us in advance to discuss.

There are some medications that are contra-indicated. It is vitally important that you discuss medications you are taking with us at your consultation.
