What is the difference between seeing Clinica and seeing a dermatologist for scar treatment?

A dermatologist can assess scars medically, prescribe topical treatments, perform subcision, and manage conditions like keloid scarring with injections or other medical interventions. At Clinica, we focus on the cosmetic improvement of scarring using laser, RF microneedling, and resurfacing technologies. For many clients, particularly those with acne scars and stretch marks, our treatments deliver significant cosmetic improvement without the need for a medical referral. If we assess your concern and feel a dermatologist is more appropriate, we will tell you.

Can all scars be treated at Clinica?

Accepted Answer

Most cosmetic scars can be meaningfully improved with the treatments we offer. However active keloid scars, which grow beyond the original wound boundary, require a different medical approach and we would refer you to a specialist for these. If we assess your scar and feel it is outside the scope of what we can effectively treat, we will always tell you honestly and point you in the right direction.

What types of acne scars can be treated?

We treat most types of acne scarring including atrophic scars such as ice pick, boxcar, and rolling scars, as well as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and red marks left after breakouts. Deeper atrophic scars typically respond best to a combination of CO2 laser or RF microneedling to remodel the scar tissue, alongside skin needling and serums to support collagen rebuilding over time. Your therapist will assess your specific scar type and recommend the most appropriate approach during your consultation.

Are scar and stretch mark treatments safe for darker skin tones?

Accepted Answer

Some treatments, particularly ablative lasers like CO2, carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones and need to be approached with care. Other treatments such as RF microneedling, skin needling, and fractional laser at lower intensities are generally well tolerated across a broader range of skin tones. At Clinica, we always assess your skin tone as part of the consultation before recommending any treatment, and we will only proceed with what is safe and appropriate for your skin.

I have recently given birth. When can I start treating stretch marks and scarring?

Post-partum skin goes through significant changes and we generally recommend waiting until after you have finished breastfeeding before beginning laser or resurfacing treatments. Once you are ready, we assess both the stretch marks and any skin laxity together and build a plan that addresses both concerns. Many post-partum clients combine stretch mark treatment with our skin tightening treatments to target texture and firmness at the same time.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the scar type, depth, and your skin's individual response. Superficial scarring and post-inflammatory marks can often be improved in three to six sessions. Deeper acne scars and stretch marks typically require a longer course of treatment with a combined approach. Scar remodelling is also a gradual process, as new collagen takes time to form and mature. Your therapist will give you a realistic expectation at your consultation and track your progress across sessions.

Will I need recovery time after treatment?

It depends entirely on the treatment. CO2 laser involves the most significant downtime of the treatments we use, typically several days of redness and skin shedding as the resurfaced tissue heals. RF microneedling and fractional laser involve mild redness for one to two days. Skin needling typically involves redness for 24 hours. Your therapist will discuss downtime in detail before any treatment is booked and we factor your lifestyle and schedule into the treatment plan from the start.
